Why should you consider having animal repellents? Every year, close to 5 million Americans, many of them children, get attacked and bitten by a dog. The CDC warns against this common occurrence and suggests using an animal repellent to prevent dog attacks and dog bites. If you carry a dog pepper spray when you are out walking, cycling or jogging you may be able to avoid this costly and dangerous event. A dog attack can leave a lasting psychological scars especially on a small child who is a victim.

Dog Attacks and Bites

When dogs AttackThe Centers for Disease Control better known as the CDC tells us on their website that close to 5 million people in United States are bitten by dogs every year with nearly one out of every 5 of them requiring emergency medical attention. They also tell us that in that number almost half of them are children ages 5 to 9 which makes that category even higher than legendary dog attack victims-USPS letter carriers.

Instances of dog attacks and dog bites on children and adults is becoming more and more common as more dogs are becoming family pets. Instances of dogs attacking another dog and dogs killing children are less common but they still occur. Wild dogs still exist in the United States and they are responsible for some of these dog attacks but according to one website pitbulls and rottweilers and a few similar dog breeds are responsible for the vast majority of dog attacks.

The American Humane Society backs up those statistics. Another organization that tracks dog attacks and dog bites is dog bites.org. On their website they claim that every day about 1,000 U.S. citizens require emergency care treatment for dog bite injuries. They also cite statistics that claim a certain number of breeds including pit bulls, rottweilers, boxers, mastiffs and others account for 81% of attacks that induce bodily harm. Those breeds, according to them, account for 87% of attacks to adults and 76% of attacks to children.

In a separate study by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of Americans hospitalized for dog bites doubled over a 15 year period with the average cost of the dog bite related hospital stay at $18,200-nearly twice the average normal injury related hospital stay.

In a recent ABC news story about home insurance costs relating to dog owners, the insurance industry paid out $489 million in claims involving dog bites in the home-or nearly 1/3 of all money paid out for homeowner's liability claims. The story claimed that was an increase of 50% over the last decade. Homeowner's insurance rates may be higher for high risk dogs such as pit bulls and rottweilers.

The American Kennel Club tells us that the average in cost for a dog is nearly $2,500, so owning a dog is not cheap.

So the next time that one of your children ask you "daddy can we get a puppy?" you may want to think twice.
